Most people do their search for a book on the computer anyway and only download it via wifi.
The Sony store is getting better, it does have some things it didn't last I checked, but it still doesn't have all of the choices Amazon has. That's fine for me, I'm willing to spend time looking elsewhere. It's not fine for my mother who doesn't like to spend time hunting for things, as easy as it may seem to other people.

Regarding the Reader Library etc., I've used it enough myself to know that my mother would not be comfortable with it. She is not of the computer generation and many things that are intuitive to you or I are confusing to her. For me there is no "should," there's only what she is likely to be happy with and what she isn't. Plugging the reader into the computer (which requires a cord she may or may not be able to find) every time she wants a book falls into the "isn't happy with" category.

I stand by my argument that the Kindle is flat easier to use for a non-tech inclined person who just wants to buy and read books easily. It is not perfect, it is not best for everyone or even for everyone who thinks it's best, and it's not what I want (I love my Sony and I did an awful lot of research before choosing it), but the Kindle is a good device that works well and has the most convenient feature set for many people.
