Images and Covers are 'different' beasts to the developers. 'Covers' have special, additional rules, to apply (so devices and Libraries treat as the 'Cover' of a book').

The only limitation is the size of the image your device can handle and the overall cumulative effect on EPUB file size (JPEG's don't compress any more,upon adding).
