To be honest, I had the same problem as original poster...

Then I just decided to save my stuff as simple txt files.

If a pdf has pics, not a problem
I take all the pages(pic) and export them into a folder, then use some scanner OCR software to convert them to txt).

If I have a problem with hard returns at the end of each line, all I do in word is go ahead add some crazy text where I want a paragraph (ex. +++) then i just use either replace using ^p (shortcut for hard return) with nothing or a space, depending on the way they put the hard return. Sometimes they (creators) add a space sometiems they dont.

Worst case senario is that I go ahead and fix any little changes that I have, via notepad, wordpad, etc. But I'd say I end up with a very useable txt file that will work perfectly.

I never used the sony software, as the one that came with the prs-505 sux'd.

I used calabre for a bit, it did what is was suppose to and more in my opion.

But in the end all i do is just drag the files from pc into a folder on memopry card then slap it into the reader. Mine is holding about 2000 books atm, tried to load up about 15,000 text files once but wouldnt get past the loading stage, hehe
