Then that would be because you pressed Menu->Settings->Menu->Restart and not Menu->Settings->Menu->
Reset like you originally indicated. There's a pretty big difference.
Restart = books and everything still there.
Reset = books, hacks all gone and you must re-download, reinstall everything.
