i am not completely sure that average income levels/cost of living "absolutely" have nothing to do with it, but I can agree with you on that when it comes to electronics. the electronics being sold here are horribly overpriced, and the electronics from Singapore and Hong Kong are quite cheaper (relative to here in Asia, I mean), but that's also because I know that most parts here are being imported, and as I know, Hong Kong is a free port, and Singapore has free trade agreements with several Asian neighbors that make their electronics cheaper.
