I specifically suggested he consider a netbook or tablet or even smartphone (he and his wife loved my Blackberry on a 3 week trip to the Domomites and our Desert Southwest) but wanted no part of any additional monthly fees.

I drop in and out of this thread. But in another thread I suggested convergence was not all it was cracked up to be. I don't want a tablet in place of a phone, too big to carry on hikes and bike rides. I don't want a small-screen phone when I browse the web extensively. I don't want a heavy, short-battery life ipad-like device when reading. Obviously technology will change and I'll see what it brings. But for the moment, separate devices seem to be MY answer to what _I_ need.
