One of the most chilling short stories about a lost civilization I have ever read is "Ozymandius" by Robert Silverberg which was published in The History of the Science Fiction Magazine: Part 4, 1956-1965. It first appeared in Infinity Magazine, November 1958.

Ozymandius in this story is a robot left over from a dead civilisation. At certain points there are brief quotes of the famous poem by Shelley. However, the poem and the story are given an unexpected and powerful twist.
