I have found using the page turn button instead of the touch screen does not use as much battery I was also using a 4GB SDHC card I now use a 512MB card with the just the few books I am reading gives a better battery life If going away for a few days I do still use the 4GB card which has more books on.
I am using the Sony mains adaptor to charge I found that USB charging was useless and Sony told me it was OK to leave the mains adaptor connected after charging. ( this adaptor allows you to read whilst charging and when the red led goes off allows Mains powered reading instead of battery powered.
I have read that the red led goes off at 80% charge
