This novel is about the adventures of three sea-faring men: Captain Scraggs, owner of the green vegetable freighter Maggie, Gibney the mate, and McGuffney, the engineer. One foggy night, when the Maggie is approaching the Golden Gate, Captain Scraggs gives the signal for full speed astern. The worn wires break at the first pull, giving the signal for full speed ahead, so the Maggie is run aground on a sandbar--and here their hilariously funny and sometimes with a touch of sadness adventure begins!
