I think I paid more for this than for 99.5% of the ebooks I've bought: $10.86, back when it was available at Fictionwise. I probably shouldn't have done, as I could buy it now from Amazon for £5.99, about $9.

Well, it's about what I expected. It's told deliberately as if of the ancient past, so there's no immediacy or tension in the story. And it's a sad story. The commentary on the text is interesting (and has links to it from varius bits of the text of the story), but I recommend leaving the commentary until after reading the whole of the story.
Really, if you've read
The Silmarillion you've read this story, just in a shorter form. There's not a great deal extra that I noticed, although I haven't compared the texts.
Ok, a change of pace for my next read:
The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie
This is the first of Agatha Christie's novels, and is out of copyright in the US, but not in life+50 or life+70 countries.
I bought it back in February 2010 for $0.76 during a fictionwise sale. A very good price, IMO. Now to see if it was also a good buy!
