well, if you put two separate files on your Kindle, it will display them both. I think that if you edit some part of the metadata of a book in Calibre such that Calibre changes the filename/folder that it uses when uploading the book to the Kindle, Calibre will not overwrite the first version of the file on the device.

I do know of times where I've been confused more than once when I was editing/reformatting a book and uploaded it to my Kindle to find the changes didn't stick... only to realize after several attempts that what I was looking at on the Kindle was the original file which had not been overwritten or deleted , and that the new file was on my Kindle, just not on the page I was looking at.

Calibre does overwrite the older file on the device if the filename and folder it uploads to are the same.
