Autonooter shouldn't have made any difference in heat. As mentioned above, the very first (and unreleased) froyo played games with the temp monitor (current Froyo is as safe as the stock Eclair as far as temperature).
However, I've noticed a difference in heat by turning the wifi off. I think that with 1.1, wifi is more aggresively trying to activate (although I have had problems with 1.1 and wifi after coming out of a sleep mode). My guess is that the wifi was trying to connect, or at least scanning in the background while you were at the swim meet. I've noticed that keeping wifi turned off reduces the heat on my NC>
Turning screen brightness up also generates more heat. And it is possible that a "rogue" application was running in teh background - you may want to download a task killer to see if you notice any problems with tasks running disproportionately. However, be aware that task killers are frequently TOO agressive in terminating tasks.
