Ding ding ding! You're right, SneakySnake!

There *was* a war, actually, fought between Italy and (as it was then called) Abyssinia.

Unravelling the clue, for those not heavily into cryptic crosswords:

Part One: [Abyssinian] War? Or just [Abyssinian] cats.

Part Two: A great gulf [abyss], *I* separate preposition [in] from article [an] ->abyss+in+i+an.
