I've seen a few aparent perpetual motion machines

Number 1 is an oil pumping platform. It can pump the oil up from below the ground, only using a fraction of the oil to do it!

We all know that it's not really a perpetual motion machine, but it does show that there are places in nature where you can get something for nothing. You can convert raw materials into energy.

Number 2 is a motor that runs forever - it's hooked up to a solar cell, and as long as it's hooked up, and the sun is shining, it runs forever.

Again, an amazing technology to a scientist of Newton's day, but understandable with the right education.

My two examples are supposed to show that there is probably an explanation other than energy from nothing - but it can still be very useful energy.

If someone seems to have violated the laws of thermodynamics, we're in for a treat. The best discoveries in science have come from someone looking deeply into anomalous results.
