I'm surprised anyone would discuss this with you, since I thought Sam's Club policy on defective items had a 30-day limit. A year and a half between buying an item and being allowed to return it would be really unusual.

I don't know of anywhere you can get a replacement CD now without buying an old one. I wouldn't open an old (but unopened) box now just to get the CD and Manual out of it. You'd just end up with another incomplete set.

If you can get $134 for a defective model that's a year and a half old already, personally I'd be thrilled with that. I'm not sure you'd get that much for the new one in the box, since many eReaders are around that price or below, and are faster with more memory.
