Digital Trends is sucking this out of their thumb. The Vatican statement said that it's not possible to obtain absolution via an app. The app doesn't claim to offer this, and never did. It was advertised an an aid to traditional confession, not as a replacement.

Once again - the Vatican has not denounced the app. What they've denounced are suggestions that were made by the media. As I said before, you're confusing jocular statements made by the press with the app itself.
