take the internal card out and format 2 partitions:

First partition - Primary - FAT32
Second Partition - Primary - EXT 3

I would make the second partition small (ie. 200 -300 Mb).... This is where the applications will be installed and the larger the partition, the more unstable it will become.

re a2sd, easiest way is still adb it.

adb shell
su
a2sd setup
