I'll have to chime in here as someone who likes their Cruz 101. I got it because I was unsure about buying e-books at their present prices, which I consider waaaay too high. I just didn't wish to buy an e-book reader for $150-250 when I wasn't sure if I would even use it very much. I got the Cruz for $109.
I updated the firmware, not that big of a deal, and easily connected to my network to access the internet as necessary. I don't use it for anything other than an e-reader. It can be used for other things, but not very well. As a cheap e-reader it works fine. I can access books from my local library using Overdrive Console, buy and read books from almost any vendor.
I was unsure about reading from an lcd screen but it is a non-issue for me. Plus I really didn't like the small screens available on any of the other common e-readers, just too small. At least the Cruz is a decent size, I simply can't imagine trying to read from a smart phone sized screen, not because of the print size but the pages are just too small. Kind of like the old childrens' books Big Little books. Yuck. I want a page size at least as big as a large paperback.
All in all the Cruz works very well as an e-book reader for me. It is not an Ipad competitor, you'll be disappointed if that is what you are wanting.
