Problem solved with 3.1 upgrade. I reinstalled both the jailbreak & SS hack and then removed in opposite order. There were some leftover files & folders with todays date on them and I deleted all. 3.1 finally installed and all systems nominal. Thanks for all your help.
P.S. I also learned that ejecting via the task bar is fubar here, gotta eject from device icons...well da that is stupid!
