Congrats on the 40 years! My husband and I just made it to 10 last year, 30 more to go, lol.

Answers to some of your first questions:

1. I read in bed 80% of the time and I don't feel it is too heavy. I did notice a big difference at first because I was used to my Classic Nook, but I got used to it. I usually start out propped up with pillows and hold it in front of me, then after an hour or so I lay down on my side. This way is much easier for me to hold as I lay my wrist on the edge of my husbands pillow and it is so comfy for me.

4. I do have sensitivity to the lcd screen, but I am the same with tv and laptops. I find adjusting the fonts and backgrounds can help with this. If I am going to be doing a marathon read (where a book I have been dying to read comes out and I know I will read for 4-12 hrs straight) I will use my classic Nook or I have the actual book to read since I buy my favourites still.

5. I use a shea/seabuckthorn oil butter on my hands at night and it is super greasy. I don't do much, I sometimes wipe the tip of my thumb on my pants, lol. But otherwise I just wash the screen. My screen gets much worse after I let my three year old play with it.

6. I haven't used it outside in the sun, but I would imagine it would be harder to see. And like others said, you would need to turn the brightness way up. You can get the anti-glare film for it or sit in the shade under a nice tree.

7. I like the touch screen myself. I also prefer the Nook Classic to the Kindle because I like it and I like to get books from the library. For library ebooks all you do (if your library doesn't have overdrive you can get a membership at the Library of Philadelphia for $15/year) is download them and open with Adobe Digital Editions and hook up your Nook to the computer, then drag the books to your Nook.

8. I do not have glasses, but I read in another thread that contacts can make your eyes sensitive to lcd screens so glasses would be better if that is true.

9. Yes, I download books to my computer then add them to my Nooks via the usb cable all the time. It is super easy. I use a program called Calibre because I like to change the titles sometimes so the series name and number comes first, then title. It also has little checkmarks next to the books that are already on my nook so I know which books to add.

Nope. All you need is an Overdrive account. most libraries have them now, if not I posted above about a paid card you can get. All she has to do is download them with the computer and load them on the Nook.

Will 3G be available at my house if my wife can use her AT&T cell phone at the house?
It depends on where you live and what service provider B&N uses. If they use AT&T then it will. I don't live in the US so I don't know about the 3G features with the Nook Classic 3G.

I can't understand why the NC does not have 3G. More money, less way to connect?
Because of the extra cost. if the Nook Color was only using 3G to shop at B&N I imagine it would be no problem, but people use it to browse the web and the bill would be crazy.
Personally, this is what I would do. I am not sure when your wife's birthday is, but I would make sure she has at least a week to play around with it and read on it with the option to return it if she doesn't like it. Different stores allow you to return them at different times. B&N is only 14 days, where Best buy is 30 days. If you have to, I would ask B&N if they can extend the return policy for the Nook Color (and get it in writing if they agree). If they won't I would return it and buy it again right before her birthday. Because we are all individual with different needs and likes, what I love your wife might hate. This way she can try it out and return it if she finds something not to her liking. I would hate to have you buy it and find she gets headaches or sore wrists, and have it past the return date. she will probably love it, but I find a reader is a very personal gadget and some people try out a few before finding the one that is right for them.
