I understand your frustration, but its not just Amazon and Kindle; this type of practice is very common in the technology industry. I few years ago I bought a Sony PRS-505 when it was still current- $299. Sony released one firmware update to address some operational issues and then all but abandoned the product. I have since watched the other Sony products and I have noticed the same pattern. Sony will come out with a new device, discontinue it after about 18 months and all but stop support on the old devices. Its very frustrating. When I call customer service they spend more time trying to sell me a new one than asking me what my problem is.
