NookColor rooting these days can be as simple as downloading a file, formatting an SD card with a special Mac/PC utility, copying the file to the card, and booting the NC with the card in it.

If your budget reaches to $500 you'll have plenty of choices in both 7in and 10in sizes. Pretty much all the above-listed products run lower (sometimes much lower).

To weed the field, decide how big you want to go on the screen and whether 3G is useful to you or not. Also, what is your drop-dead date for buying. The Android webpad/tablet market is in active flux right now with new products showing up almost weekly.
