Any day now, you'll be stopped by trenchcoated guys in alleys offering up their own brand of ebook reader.

It's not really that odd to see small electronics showing up in odd places; back in the days of the Home Computer wars the TI99 and Timex-Sinclair showed up everywhere except Girl Scout cookie drives. (And I may have simply missed it when it happened.)

It's part and parcel of the mainstreaming and commoditization of new technologies. Once a product stops being targetted at hobbyists and early adopters availability explodes as thousands of vendors jump into the new market, each seeking a 5% share of the market leading up to a collapse/consolidation as the natural size of the product's market reveals itself. Consolidation doesn't usually take place at once, by the way; rather it happens in waves. As early losers drop out, new players pop in, reinflating the bubble until the next market reset.

It can take a while before the long term winners are revealed and until then hope reigns supreme. So sit back and enjoy the show; the fun's just starting.
