Whew! My brain is reeling in a perturbed orbit!
Well ... When King Ferdinand II conquered the Moors in Spain in 1492, he celebrated by adding 2 heraldic columns to his coat of arms - to represent the pillars of Hercules (modern day Strait of Gilbrater) with a ribbon draped around them.
This addition to his coat of arms morphed into a modern symbol.
