When you say word documents are not the way to go what do you mean? Do you mean using a Doc file as a base for conversion or publishing an eBook in the Doc format?
In terms of actually publishing a Word doc, I would think it's not inconceivable if you're a savvy enough Word user, along with perhaps other publishing tools and other creative design methods.
But again, I'm not sure if that's what you meant.
Why turn posts into a book? I can't answer that with the exception of using posts to develop a book. And again, I would assume much depends on how creative you are, what kind of content you're working with, and how it all integrates into a final product.
I didn't come up with the idea. FastPencil is a service that no doubt received millions in venture capital and I would assume they have ideas on what turning blogs into books is all about.
Some blogs I've seen are highly creative. Given a twist and a turn here and there, I could easily see how they could be turned into a "book" format.
