Baen doesn't have to pay Amazon, Kobo or Apple a sales commission since they sell direct. A $6.00 Baen book would be at least $7.99 on Amazon. Macmillan/S&S/Penguin only receive $6.99 for a book selling for $9.99.
Ms Spano's book currently sells on Amazon for $8.76. I don't know if they use standard 30% agent or wholesale pricing. But if you subtract 30% it brings you down to $6.13 which is close to Baen's.
