Didn't the Mythbusters try to make a boat out of concrete?

Stitchawl, I think it is safe to say you have this one. Perhaps it would be ok to quiz on with a new question?
I think so too... And boy, do I have a good one. It's another mystery to solve.

"Don't tell me," said Dr. Haledjian. "Let me guess.
You made a play for a young lady, and got in a mess
again."

Cyril Makin, the hopeless Romeo, nodded unhappily.
"This time I was sure my story was perfect. But
something went wrong, I can't figure what.

"You've heard of Gertrude Morgan?" he asked. "Her
grandfather sailed with a famous explorer, and her cousin
climbed Mt. Everest. If you haven't done something
dangerous, you won't impress her at all.

"I took her out to dinner Christmas Eve, and it
seemed a good time to tell my Arctic Circle tale," the
young man continued. "I started off by commenting
that I had once spent Christmas in much less comfortable
surroundings.

"Then I told her about the morning Lt. Craven and I
were making our way back to the Arctic Observation
Weather Station. I was in the Navy then. Suddenly
Craven fell and fractured his leg. Ten minutes later the
bit of ice we were crossing broke away. We began to
drift out to sea.

"I realized that Craven and I and the dogs we had with
us would freeze to death unless I started a fire. As we
had used up all our matches, I got out a small magnifying
glass. I tore off some sheets of paper from our reports
and laid them on a steel box. By focusing the sun's rays
onto the paper, I soon started a good blaze.
"Fortunately a passing ship picked us up after 24 hours.
The captain said I was a bit of a hero."

"But Miss Morgan didn't agree," observed Haledjian.
"And it's hardly surprising!"

What was wrong with Cyril's story? Why didn't Miss Morgan believe it?
