It's pretty obvious that the root reason for the lack of connectivity of the i* is to keep the file system locked down. After all, if you can't install a USB drive, or a flash card, or even mount the thing as another drive, then you can't get any files into it without filtering them through iTunes. And Jobs has just another means of enforcing his will on what you can do with your own hardware.
Frankly, if I drop $500 plus on anything, I'm gonna do with it what I want, not what some control freak twice removed from the end user says I can. And if the price I pay for that is screwing up my device or "fragmentation" or voiding my warranty, then so be it. It's my money and my problem, I believe I'll take my money elsewhere.
