The tidal surge is in far north Queensland and it's there they are warning people against going to the coast (a second surge was/is expected this morning). I am 1300km away in southeast Queensland at the north end of the Sunshine Coast, and the beaches remain open and patrolled. In a relatively average (to my experience) 2m/6.5' swell, I am "safe" (within certain parameters confined by my own bodybashing ability ). I will only rarely swim on unpatrolled beaches (only in safe conditions in safe areas), and never on a "closed" beach.

Cheers,
Marc
