Google have admitted that they need to update Android to support more than phones, they've spend the best part of last year telling people not to create tablets based on the current versions of Android, they've sunk a huge amount of effort into v3 which
is designed to support devices other than smartphones.
In other words, they agree with you. And v3 is here. It's just that your book reader - which is quite amazing in that it can run earlier versions of Android - can't run the new version. Yet. Very impressive the Nook rooting community.
