The benefit is that most of the uses that the iPad is best at don't involve a keyboard. When I watch a movie on my iPad I don't want a keyboard. When I read a book, I don't want a keyboard. Even when I surf the web, most of the time I'm not using the keyboard, I'm just tapping links on the screen, and the soft keyboard works just fine for typing in the occasional URL.

It's easier to add a keyboard for occasional use than to be stuck with one that you're not using most of the time.
