I would suggest making it clear that you are looking into epub options, and describing, just as you have here, the problems you are having with smashwords etc. Someone may be able to offer suggestions.

As a reader, I generally don't even bother looking at Amazon. From my point of view, there are enough books out there that it's not worth the hassle converting books, so if it's not easily accessible to me in epub/pdf/rtf/txt I will find something that is. I'm not trying to shoot you down, and most of the others aren't, although some do get a bit over the top. But one thing I've found is that many authors who don't read ebooks themselves will publish on Amazon only, because they don't realise that there are other devices and formats out there. So they are missing a whole segment of the market.
