It hurts less for my, but my lobes were pierced with a gun (blunt earring shot through) and my tragus was pierced with a needle. I did hear a crunching sound when the needle went through the cartilage. It got swollen the 2nd and 3rd day which is normal for me. After that I had to think of not holding my phone to that ear and sleeping on my other side.
After about a couple of years I changed the ball closure ring to a smooth segment ring. A couple of years ago I put a labret (mostly used for nose piercings) in, mainly because I use in-ear earphones so a normal barbell wouldn't work. First I used a
bioplast one, on which you put a ball/stud on a "stick" in. But I changed it to a
normal metal one because I kept pulling out the stud because my hair wound around it. Haven't lost the ball yet, it doesn't even seem to unscrew.
