The Dream of Perpetual Motion by Dexter Palmer. A steampunk-ey reboot of Shakespeare's
The Tempest... with shades of
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory thrown in for good measure. Loved it.
Also, Neal Stephenson's
Diamond Age. Or Anthony Huso's
The Last Page -- which has lots of steampunk elements, but I'd hesitate to label it as such.
I'll also second the suggestions of Gibson, Mieville and Powers. Powers should be read just... well... because.
