Spoiler:
Known today more for his social activism than his singing, Harry Belafonte began his singing career rather auspiciously in New York City, performing before a live audience for the first time, he was backed by the Charlie Parker Band including Charlie Parker himself, Miles Davis and Max Roach.
He quickly got the moniker of "King of the Calypso" when he released an album in 1956 entitled "Calypso" which became the first LP to sell over 1 million copies. "Jamaica Farewell" was his first chart tune reaching #14 in November of 1956.
