Hospitals are touchy about used items. Depending on the age of the books, there's a mold/mildew issue. They're pretty strict about what they'll allow near people who are, say, healing from surgery.
I can't think of anything better than craigslist. We've gotten rid of bookshelves, a heavy tv, an old couch and boxes of children's clothes just by asking people to pick them up. (Which is good, as we had no easy way to get rid of some of the larger items.) Say they're free, say they're $5 or $10 per box, doesn't matter. Just be prepared for people to pick through the boxes trying to find stuff they want. But at least you're not doing the hard work then
