There are a lot of bakeries these days, but they don't make many breads. Mostly sweet rolls, sweet croissants, sweet breads, and pizza. Sometimes even that is sweet. Oh... and white bread. I saw what I 'thought' was a peasant loaf... round, unsliced, top slashed and sprinkled with corn meal, but when I picked it up, my fingers sank in half way. Bummer.

San Francisco is famous for sour dough bread that melts in your mouth. Maybe you could get the recipe and share it with your Japanese friends.
