When I read a book for the first time I read it from start to finish in one sitting. For that reason I prefer shorter novels (less than 300 pages) which I can easily finish in a couple of hours. I won't start longer books (600 - 700 pages) unless I know I will have enough time to finish - I usually allow about an hour per 100 pages but after a big session (anything more than 6 hours) my eyes are so fatigued that I try to limit how many longer books I read.
Yeah I know I could take a break but I don't...
If I am not enjoying a book and I put it down I am unlikely to return to it.
When I reread a book (which I do often if I have enjoyed it) I can start and stop at any point in the book and I often will have up to 10 different books that I am rereading at any time.
