On the iPad, I use
Pages. It's a paid app ($9.99) that lets you save in three formats: Pages, PDF, and DOC (compatible with MS Word). The only real downside of Pages IMO is it's lack of folders for storing documents.

Do you have an external keyboard? I find that it's damn near impossible to type on the touch screen for very long.
something else kind of related to the rest of your post is , I think, the way everything in the ipad is very walled off - apps from apps - and apps from the larger non-apple ecosystem.
I'm starting to feel this real aversion toward the ipad with all it's attention-destroying 'crapplets' and such...
okay..better stop....haha

I bought an external keyboard/docking station (a wireless keyboard is also available for roughly the same price) at the same time I bought the iPad, but I find myself more and more relying on the virtual keyboard. I haven't experienced any problems with it, although I wish the virtual keyboard had directional arrows for navigating. I have no problem typing on the virtual keyboard for extended periods, and I find it's great for kicking back and typing with one hand.
That you find it difficult to type for extended periods on the virtual keyboard may be the difference in our typing styles. I have a very light touch, but I've noticed some folks hit keyboards with such strength I'm surprised they don't fly apart.
