But in this scenario (where there is no e-book) you
can't send them a signal that you want an e-book version. Unless you were to contact them and tell them so, which is a good idea.
The thing you
do accomplish by buying the paper book is you let the Publisher know that you want books by that author, which is good for you, and you make sure that the author gets at least some compensation for his work, so he's more likely to actually write more books.
