They aren't losing money on the overnight delivery, and they routinely use the "Free shipping, just buy more stuff" and "buy Prime" to get people to buy more and use their services more.

Smaller publishers have fewer resources. Securing digital rights for older books in particular tends to slow down this process.

However, I do suspect that the economics of ebooks are getting more persuasive as ebooks pick up steam.
