I've found things to be a bit unsettling while reading - "Exquisite Corpse" by Poppy Z Brite comes to mind. I usually use that as my example of - "Argh! That's disgusting!". Strangely enough though, I did like the book - it was very well written.

But I think the only story that actually upset me past the reading enough to have me staring into space at times lost in the horror was "The Long Walk" by Richard Bachman. I know - only a short story. However, that story had a profound effect on me that I couldn't shake for a couple of weeks after reading.
