I was the same way. I spent an enormous amount of cash on supplements. During that time is when I decided to load myself up on beta carotene to see if the orange tint made it look like I had a tan. (I was in my early 20's. Why else would vanity drive me to do such things? LOL....) I was taking 12 - 20 pills of 25,000 IU a day. My palms did turn orange, I suppose my skin did as well, but I'm already tan, and it was so gradual, that it was hard to really see it on anyplace other than my palms. I wasn't safety orange, just a tint. Whatever the case, I had no ill effects from it. My energy level was the same, my mood was the same, my eating habits were the same; nothing changed. After summer was over I stopped taking it.
The chit girls come up with in the name of vanity.
