The one thing I bought it for -- word processing -- it does pretty well, but otherwise I'd have to agree with your assessment. I'm really disappointed that there's no easy way to copy passages from books and transfer that copied text to a PC word processing program as there is with my Kindles. My Kindles automatically copy everything I underline to their My Clippings text files. Why can't the iPad do something like that?
