What I want in an ereader is a touch screen. I think that is the biggest priority. I like the idea of a color screen, but I could probably live without it. I would prefer a wifi connection for my purchases, but since I buy primarily from kobo I will only get that with a Kobo reader. I always have my iphone for fall back, and have a large selection of reading apps on there.
I would want fast page turns, prefer not to have the "blink" but realize it is unavoidable with eink. Long battery life is a definate bonus.

Have you check the Sony eink readers? Awesome battery life! There is a model which is really portable and small, without compromise reading experience and I believe is also in sale with a reduce price, about 120 or something. They are touch screen and really good quality.
Kindle 3 is not touchscreen but provides an awesome reading experience with up to 1 month of battery life. It has the newest pearl screen which is the best and most recent eink screen shared with Sony.
Based on your post and if you read romances, I don't think you need anything that provides color.
