I haven't seen a Kindle "in the flesh," but as I understand it, the controller shouldn't make any difference as far as contrast goes.

I have seen a 505 and 500 side by side (as have a large number of folks around here by now ), the 505 is significantly brighter and more contrasty than the 500, much more so to the mark one eyeball than the bare numerical measurement of increased reflectivity would suggest by itself.
