We've finally troubleshooted the issue

it was narrowed down to a corrupt registary file on the computer's Windows 7 that was preventing the Kobo from mounting correctly or be detected correctly.

Only solution would be a full system reformat and install of Windows 7

but would like to know if there is anyway to fix a corrupt windows file without rewriting the coding or reformating?
