It's also a cost cutting measure. Every byte that crosses a Nook 3G costs Barnes and Noble $$ in access fees paid to AT&T. If WiFi is good enough for customers, why pay not stop paying AT&T? 3G is also a bigger deal outside the US but, since B&N does not believe in life outside its own borders (pardon the pun?), WiFi, again, is "good enough".
For the rest of us, there is still the Kindle.
