Some libraries do have mobi books, which can be read on the Kindle, but as far as I know they are in the minority. Still, it's worth checking out your local library to see if they offer mobi books to check out. I'm sorry, I'm probably not helping your decision any more... in any case, you don't have to buy books from the Sony store for a Sony if you do decide to get one, there is also the Kobo store Fictionwise...
