The Grecian Bend was a dance step that really contorted the body. When the guys were digging the caissons for the Brooklyn Bridge, several of them developed nitrogen bubbles moving from their blood stream into their joints. Very painful, causing them to bend themselves in strange ways trying to relieve the pain, thus the name.

It was my very dear friend, Dr. Jolie Bookspan, who worked out the currently used medical protocols for the hyperbaric chamber used to relieve the problems.
